Why Should I Tithe?

The Scripture says something very interesting. It says that the reason for the tithe is to teach us to reverence God and to place Him first. We are to somehow express that He is our greatest treasure of all. Where we put or invest our money, by choice, will help our heart move that way.

In other words, if you want God to bless your marriage, put God first in your marriage. If you want God to bless your job, put Him first in your job. If you want God to bless your decisions about your future, then place Him first in your decisions about your future. If you want God to bless your finances, then put Him first in your finances.

Giving is the proof we have conquered Greed- Giving strengthens our devotion to Christ and frees us from the dictatorship of consumerism. It provides an outlet for compassion and allows us to proclaim that we believe in God’s sufficiency and provision.

It’s not just in what we say, but what we do, how we live and how we give. The Lord’s tithe and our offering are two ways of exercising our faith in God and our love for others. God calls us to give the first of what we have and He will bless the rest.

The purpose of tithing is to teach us to put God first in our lives. God doesn’t need our money. Instead, He wants what our money represents: our priorities, passions, purposes. Make a commitment to tithe, and dedicate yourself to it. And more than anything... trust God and let Him prove His promises.

Let each one [give] as he has made up his own mind and purposed in his heart, not reluctantly or sorrowfully or under compulsion, for God loves (He takes pleasure in, prizes above other things, and is unwilling to abandon or to do without) a cheerful (joyous, “prompt to do it”) giver [whose heart is in his giving].  2 Corinthians 9:7
